At Mercy Dogs, we believe every hero deserves a second chance—and so does every dog. Our mission begins by forming strong partnerships with local animal shelters across Texas and beyond. These shelters are often filled with incredible dogs who, through no fault of their own, have found themselves without a family. Many of them possess the temperament, intelligence, and resilience needed to transform into life-changing service companions.

Why We Partner with Shelters

By collaborating with shelters, we give overlooked dogs a new purpose. Instead of facing uncertain futures, these dogs are carefully evaluated for their suitability as service animals. We look for qualities such as loyalty, confidence, calmness under pressure, and the natural desire to bond with people. Through this process, we not only save lives but also honor the legacy of the original “dogs of mercy” from World War I who served alongside soldiers on the battlefield.

When a shelter dog is selected for our program, the impact is doubled:

  • The Dog’s Life is Saved – Instead of being forgotten, the dog gains a second chance filled with purpose, care, and unconditional love.

  • A Veteran or First Responder’s Life is Transformed – That same dog will go on to provide independence, comfort, and healing to a hero living with the invisible wounds of service, such as PTSD or anxiety challenges.
