Application and Matching Process

At Mercy Dogs, we understand that bringing a service dog into someone’s life is more than just pairing a veteran or first responder with a dog—it’s about building a partnership rooted in trust, healing, and hope. That’s why our application and matching process is designed with care, transparency, and compassion.

Step 1: Application Submission

Veterans and first responders begin by completing our detailed application form. This helps us learn more about their background, daily needs, lifestyle, and specific challenges. Whether it’s PTSD management, or companionship, every detail shared ensures we can make the most informed match possible.

Step 2: Review and Consultation

Once the application is received, our team carefully reviews it. We then schedule a one-on-one consultation, either in person or virtually, to dive deeper into the applicant’s needs, goals, and expectations. This step ensures that we’re not just finding a service dog—but the right service dog.

Step 3: Matching With the Right Dog

Using the information gathered, our trainers evaluate which of our dogs in training best aligns with the applicant’s lifestyle and support needs. We consider factors such as energy level, temperament, training progress, and even personality fit. Just like people, every dog is unique, and finding the right match is essential for long-term success.

Step 4: Training Together

Once a match is identified, the applicant will meet with the dog and then will go through a board and train service dog program. After the board and train program, then the applicant will receive hands-on training sessions, education on commands and cues, and learning how to manage real-life scenarios together. The goal is to empower the handler while reinforcing the dog’s skills in a supportive, structured environment.

Step 5: Graduation and Lifelong Support

When both the dog and handler demonstrate readiness, they “graduate” as a team. But our commitment doesn’t end there. Mercy Dogs provides ongoing support, follow-up training, and a network of resources to ensure the partnership continues to thrive for years to come.

Why This Matters

Our process isn’t just about efficiency—it’s about dignity and respect. Every applicant is heard, every dog is valued, and every match is made with the belief that together, we can restore hope and independence.

At Mercy Dogs, the journey from application to companionship is more than a process—it’s the beginning of a healing partnership that saves two lives at once.
